Challenge

The Charlotte-Mecklenberg Police Department (CMPD) of Charlotte, North Carolina is staffed with over 1300 police officers and 800 administrative personnel. It sought to give officers easy access to mission-critical data in order to effectively do their jobs and manage the peace. Challenges included:

:: Officers were forced to travel to one of the "dumb terminal" sites located throughout the county to access mission-critical information

:: Access to terminals was a challenge as they were shared by both police officers and administrative personnel

:: The system needed to be configured to remain functional in the event of a failure

:: After attempting a number of workarounds to implement a client/server network implementation, CMPD realized they needed assistance to devise a better connectivity solution

:: Empowered police officers by providing them each with a laptop computer to access information convieniently from their patrol cars

:: Succesfully integrated PC clients with IBM hosts for seamless data and information exchange

:: In the event of a failure, officers can still connect to data dynamically without any user or administrator intervention
